Girls Camp 2010

Finally I went to girls camp as a leader. The pics are of the girls from my ward, but I actually went as a YCL Leader with the Stake. It was fun and challenging and very different from girls camp where I grew up. But that was all the better. I mean, cabins and bathrooms and a cafeteria? So fun! Here are a few pics from our hike. It was a little winding and we took a wrong turn and ended up on some forest road. We finally found cell phone service though and called the pick-up truck to pick us up. It is a ward tradition to get lost on hikes so we felt pressure to live up to the standard. Gotta love it!

Ethan's 6th Birthday!

Our little man turned six this year and started first grade. We can't believe how much he's grown. He is such a big helper and always lasts the longest during family work projects. We are so proud of how fast he is learning and growing. We expect to see great things from him as he gets older. (His cake is a baseball with little baseball cupcakes all around it.)

Melia's 8th Birthday

What a great day for Melia and our family! Our camera broke the week of her birthday so we had to take pictures with our film camera and keep forgetting to get them developed. So those will come later. We are very proud of her for her choice to get baptized. It was so fun to have all of her grandparents here, as well as one uncle and one cousin. What a special day. We know she will continue to develop into a lovely young woman.

Savannah's 4th Birthday

Savannah turned 4 this year. I can't believe how big she is and how responsible she is getting. She loves to sing and play at being a mommy. She won't wear anything but dresses and sandals, and she loves it when I make her hair like Shirley Temple. And she loves Shirley Temple. And The Sound of Music. And pretty much anything girl-y.

We've decided that the best way to relax is a week in San Diego. We spent 4 fabulous days walking up and down the beach finding beautiful shells to add to our collection. The weather was gorgeous, the KOA accommodating, and the food much better than last year. The kids keep telling me they love the cabin and they want to go back. Me too! Here are some pics of our relaxing week.

Originally I planned on writing on New Year's Day but we had such a full one that I've put it off. Several things of note: my 31st birthday, Dustin's friend found his missing phone with all of our vacation pictures on it, school started again, and I received a fourth Church calling.

I loved my birthday. I slept in and had breakfast in bed while watching my new chick flick. After finally getting up I convinced my family to take me up the canyon for some exploring. Then we went to dinner at a great local farm fresh grill and finally ended up at home for cake and ice cream and presents. So fun--Dustin and the kids and my family and Dustin's family all made me feel so special. I love my birthday!

Then, the same weekend, Dustin's friend called to say he had found Dustin's missing phone (for six months--we have already replaced it) under the seat of his car. Yeah! I nearly cried because it was the only record of our trip to the Redwood Forest in California this year. Our other camera had problems that weekend.

School started again and I am slowly cleaning the house after the holiday fun. Savannah is bored and cranky because her playmates left her again and the other two are much better behaved because their little minds are so busy during the day. The routine is slowly returning.

And finally, I received my fourth calling for the new year. I was asked by the stake to serve on the Stake Girls' Camp Staff as the assistant over YCL's. I'm very excited but a little apprehensive since there are about three meetings per month and a lot of extra stuff that will add to an already busy schedule. However, I told the high councilman who called me that I would put up with almost anything to get to participate in girls' camp again--I have great memories of my own camp years.

Dustin continues to be busy with school and work and his calling as the Elder's Quorum President. He loved having a break over Christmas to breathe and remember how to relax.

I'm very excited to begin a new volunteer position at the kids' school with the Art Masterpiece program. Every two weeks I will visit two classrooms with a work of art and lead a 15 minute discussion about it with the children. I'm very excited about this. I went to three trainings for it and I think it will be a fun way to participate in the kids' school day.

I completely forgot to post pictures of Halloween and Ethan's broken arm and Dustin's surprise birthday party. Backyard Campfire

Tonight for Family Home Evening Dustin built a campfire pit in our rocks out back and we roasted hotdogs and smores. Then we sang songs, read a conference talk from the Ensign, and Dustin and I took turns telling stories from when we were kids. It was so awesome. I love our kids. They are so smart and they have so many incredible ideas. I love that Savannah kept wanting me to squirt her with water in the mouth because the fire made her hot. I love that Melia found two sticks that she says are her music sticks and she used them to keep the beat while we sang. I love that Ethan thought he had to shout to be heard from the other side of the campfire. I love that my husband thought of using all those rocks to make a fire pit. I love that the honey-do I gave him of getting rid of all the branches I cut off the trees was done by having a blast burning them in the fire pit instead of doing it the boring way and hauling them to the dump like I suggested. I hope when the kids look back on their childhood they remember tonight and know that Mom and Dad love them.

THE DOG DID IT
The kids have all discovered the efficacy of blaming the dog for their misdeeds. The following occured just a couple of days ago.
Mom: Where are my chocolates?
Kids: Silence
Mom: Kids, I had a bag of really yummy chocolates I was getting out to share, where are they?
Kids: Silence
Mom: Melia? Did you take them?
Melia: Head shake.
Mom: Where did I put those?
10 minute pause.
Remmy (our one year old pitbull): sniff, chew, sniff, head waggle
Mom: What's up Remmy? What is that around your neck?
The missing bag of chocolates (now significantly smaller) was tied around the dog collar. This might explain the mysterious stomach aches afflicting my delightful children this past weekend. Next time I eat all the cake, or ice cream, or cookies, or candy, I'm blaming it on the one member of our family who can't speak for herself. Poor dog.

Our friends Brad and Melanie McCally and their two sweet children, Bryson and Annabelle, made a quick pit stop at our house the weekend before Labor Day. It was so awesome to see them! We all met while Dustin, Melia, and I lived in Southfield, Michigan, Summer 2003. Good times and good memories. The last time we saw them was Summer 2005 when we lived in Austin, Texas. They live in San Antonio, Texas now.

Labor Day 2009

One of Dustin's dental school friends has a great-grandpa who acquired some property in the White Mountains of Arizona (near Greer, AZ) sometime in the 60's. Lucky for us, the family has maintained the property beautifully and the friend invited us and some other dental school buddies to spend the weekend there. Despite rain and thunder and lightning, we spent a relaxing weekend in the mountains with temperatures nearly 30 degrees cooler than in Mesa--what a welcome reprieve! The kids and the dog loved the wide open spaces, Dustin and I loved the quiet. Thanks Buehler's and all who came for a great weekend!

This red swing was made from a truck axel and set at a tilt so that the person on the other side is facing the opposite direction. It turns around and around and is super fun!

The pond was fun--Savannah decided to throw her jacket in to "clean" it while everyone was fishing. No fishing pics unfortunately, but four were caught!

This is the "cabin" we stayed in. It is bigger than our house with totally retro decor. I loved it! The windows on the north side were huge and looked out over the meadow you see in front. The lightning was beautiful from there.

First Day of School

My very handsome and silly husband actually started his second year of dental school on August 3, 2009 but I didn't snap this until later. This is, however, the way he looks every day--scrubs, backpack and water bottle. The water bottle is infamous in that it shows up in all sorts of places. Classmates recognize it now and have been known to comment on its last location.

Melia, Ethan, and blissfully unaware Savannah. She had every intention of staying at school with them. I've never seen her so sad as when I carried her back to the car after taking her siblings to their first day of class. She talks every day about how she needs to get her shots and turn five so she can go to school with Mia and Ethan "tomorrow."

As you can see, I'm none too good at starting new projects. So here it is AUGUST and I'm posting my second time. Since April we have had multiple crazy things happen in our family: school got out, the car burned up and in the process started the house on fire, we have a dog now, the kids and I spent the summer in Washington, and Dustin took his first national board certification exam. Crazy stuff! Now the kids are back in school--Melia in second grade and Ethan in Kindergarten. Savannah is bored (and me too a little) and Dustin is already deep in the throes of his second year at dental school.

Here's to blogging on a quarterly basis!

Due to the looks of awe, stunned silences, and high-pitched "what?"'s at the news that I DON'T BLOG, I am going to start a family blog. I don't actually have anything against blogging, I'm just too dang lazy! But with our families so far away I figure this will be a good way to give the grandparents what they so desperately need: pictures. Plus, I love reading all the other blogs and I'm tired of not seeing my family in the list of blog links on the sidebar of the pages I read. Here I go!
